Apparently, this was a way of having someone take an oath when the situation being sworn was very serious. Putting the hand under the thigh was a euphemism, a nice way of saying that the servant put his hand on Abraham's "procreative organ". While there is speculation as to what such an act was supposed to signify in an oath it is clear that doing something like this made the oath a very serious matter.
